Emissions Reduction

There are thousands of reciprocating compressors operating in the natural gas industry across the United States, each with an average of four cylinders, representing hundreds of thousands of piston rod packing systems in service. These systems contribute close to 100 Bcf per year of methane emissions into the atmosphere, one of the largest sources of emissions at natural gas compressor stations.

Packing systems are used to maintain a tight seal around the piston rod, preventing the gas compressed to high pressure in the compressor cylinder from leaking, while allowing the rod to move freely, however, all packing systems leak under normal conditions. The amount of which depends on cylinder pressure, fitting and alignment of the packing parts, and amount of wear on the rings and rod shaft. A new packing system properly aligned and fitted, may lose approximately 12 or more standard cubic feet per minute. A worn packing system can lose 200+ standard cubic feet per hour. Reciprocating compressors in the gas industry leak gas during normal operations. Areas of high leak frequency include flanges, valves, and fittings located on compressors. The highest volume of gas loss is associated with piston rod packing systems.

Under the best conditions, new packing systems that are properly installed on a smooth, well-aligned shaft can be expected to leak. Higher leak rates are cause by poor fit, alignment of the packing parts, and wear. Leakage typically occurs from four areas:

  1. Around the packing case through the nose gasket.

  2. Between the packing cups.

  3. Around the rings from slight movement in the cup groove as the rod moves back and forth.

  4. Between the rings and shaft.

Typically leaking gases are vented to the atmosphere through packing vents on the flange. ShalePro has analyzed the benefits of capturing emissions from compressor packing. This concept is economically viable in a magnitude of ways; offering cost savings and acting as a compliance driven project.  Projects like these reduce emissions per company goals, enhance packing life cycle assessment per OOOO, and allows the reuse of captured gas for fuel, as well as opening our clients up to potential tax benefits from federal and state governments.

Green Energy Solutions - Solar & Electric Vehicle Charger Installs

Solar Services

Adding solar to your energy portfolio is all about reducing your footprint, which should include the type of foundation used to install your solar panels. Helical piles are the perfect solution to keep ground disturbance at a minimum and leave no lasting changes to the ground.

Unlike concrete foundations, helical piles can easily be removed and reused, creating a more eco-friendly option for your foundation. They are also able to be installed in inclement weather, require no site prep or excavation, and are a vibration-free install for environmentally sensitive areas.

Other benefits of helical piles are:

  • Much faster foundation installation time

  • Does not require grading and can be used in uneven or hilly terrain

  • Solar panels can be mounted immediately after installation – no waiting for concrete to cure

  • Continuous torque monitoring and print out documentation assures each pile will meet the load requirement

  • Coated for long term corrosion protection

  • No spoils to remove

ShalePro’s solar installation services go far beyond just foundational support. Our in-house electrical department combined with our helical pile installation makes us a turn-key option for installing anything from singular panels to solar farms.
